People's Action Party of Malaya
Founded: 10 March 1964
Dissolved: 9 September 1965
Symbol: Flash & circle
The Malaysian extension of Singapore's ruling People's Action Party applied for registration on 3 February 1964 and participated in the General Election that year in the Peninsular. On 13 August 1965, four days after Singapore separated from the Federation, sole lawmaker C. V. Devan Nair "replaced" Lee Kuan Yew as "secretary-general" of PAP Malaya. However, the Malaysian government de-registered the party, citing its constitution that stipulated it to be subordinate to a now-foreign party and its existence had become anomalous. After attempts to register a new party with the same name failed, the group launched DAP on 11 October 1965, substituting the flash with a rocket. Before it was legalised on 19 March 1966, pro-tem chairman Chen Man Hin won a by-election as an independent to hand the nascent entity its first unofficial state seat. On 30 July 1967, Nair stepped down as DAP secretary-general with the intention to return to Singapore and was succeeded by Goh Hock Guan, who also retained Nair's seat in the 1969 GE. Goh relinquished his posts after the May 13 incident and eventually left to join Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia. Under Lim Kit Siang, DAP established itself as a major opposition party, drawing support mainly from the minority Chinese and Indian communities, and often held the most seats next to UMNO. DAP has been part of several opposition coalitions, such as Gagasan Rakyat (People's Concept), Barisan Alternatif (Alternative Front), Barisan Rakyat (People's Front), Pakatan Rakyat (People's Pact) and Pakatan Harapan (Hope Coalition). After the 2008 GE, DAP displaced Gerakan as the linchpin in the Penang state coalition government, with Lim's son Lim Guan Eng as Chief Minister. Ten years later, DAP became part of the federal government for the first time when PH won the 2018 GE and the younger Lim was made Finance Minister. In Singapore, PAP remains the government with a dominant parliamentary supermajority until today.
