People's Action Party of Malaya
Founded: 10 March 1964
Dissolved: 9 September 1965
Symbol: Flash & circle
The Malaysia extension of the ruling party in Singapore, it performed poorly in the only General Election it participated in the Peninsular. On 13 August 1965, four days after Singapore separated from Malaysia, sole lawmaker C. V. Devan Nair replaced Lee Kuan Yew as secretary-general of PAP Malaya but a month later, the party was de-registered by the Malaysian societies registrar. On 11 October 1965, remnants of the defunct party applied to register DAP after failing to re-lodge the name "People's Action Party, Malaya" and substituted the flash with a rocket. Before DAP was legalised on 19 March 1966, a by-election took place to fill a State Assembly seat and pro-tem chairman Chen Man Hin ran as an independent, defeating the Alliance candidate from MCA to gain the party's first state representative. On 30 July 1967, Nair relinquished his party post with the intention of returning to Singapore and was succeeded by Goh Hock Guan, who also retained Nair's seat successfully in the 1969 GE. After the May 13 racial riots, Goh resigned the seat on 1 October 1969 and eventually left to join Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia. Under the leadership of Lim Kit Siang, DAP became a major opposition party, drawing support mainly from the minority Chinese and Indian communities, and was often the largest party next to Barisan Nasional or UMNO in the Malaysian Parliament. Since 2008, DAP has governed the Penang state upon capturing it from Gerakan, with Lim's son Lim Guan Eng as Chief Minister. In Singapore, the dominant PAP continues to maintain its supermajority until today and has not kept any ties with DAP.
