Sarawak United People's Party
Founded: 12 June 1959
The oldest political party in Sarawak founded by prominent Chinese community faces Ong Kee Hui and Stephen Yong, it began as a left-wing movement that confronted the ruling Alliance government on several issues. Some members even took up arms and were deported from the state. Initially opposed to the formation of Malaysia, it later adopted a more reconciliatory approach and formed a coalition government with Sarawak Alliance in 1970. In 1973, SUPP was an inaugural founder of BN and stayed on until after the 2018 Malaysia General Election where it joined its fellow Sarawak BN component parties to form local coalition GPS.
