PMIP Malaya began as the religion faction of UMNO Malaya but branched out as a separate organisation known as Pan-Malayan Islamic Association on 24 November 1951 before evolving into a political party and making its debut in Singapore. In December 1966, Singapore introduced legislation to bar parties from being affiliated to Malaysian ones. PMIP Singapore was renamed AI, at times known as "Angkatan Islam Singapura" or AIS for short. From 1972, it contested elections under the UNF alliance. In the eighties, its final contests were under its own banner, offering one candidate. On 14 March 2011, it made a discreet application to officially add "Singapura" to its name and adopted "Angkasa" as acronym. The drivers behind the name change were unknown as it was thought to be, and continued to remain, inactive. On the other hand, its former Malaysian equivalent, known by its Malay name Parti Islam Se-Malaysia or PAS today, is a major opposition party.
