In Malaya, PMIP began as the religious faction of UMNO but on 24 November 1951, it branched out into a separate organisation known as Pan-Malayan Islamic Association before evolving into a political party and making its debut in Singapore. In December 1966, Singapore introduced legislation to bar parties from being affiliated to Malaysian ones. PMIP Singapore was renamed AI and was at times referred to as "Angkatan Islam Singapura" or AIS for short. In the 1972 and 1976 elections, AI went under the UNF alliance. By the time it became inactive, it had garnered only single-digit percentages and lost its deposit in every seat it contested. On 14 March 2011, AI made a discreet application to officially add "Singapura" to its name and adopt "Angkasa" as its acronym but continued to remain dormant. On the other hand, its former hinterland, which became Parti Islam Se-Malaysia or PAS, is a major force in Malaysia today.
