PMIP Malaya began as the religion faction of UMNO Malaya but branched out as a separate organisation known as Pan-Malayan Islamic Association on 24 November 1951 before evolving into a political party and making its debut in Singapore. In December 1966, Singapore introduced legislation to bar parties from being affiliated to Malaysian ones and PMIP Singapore was renamed AI. From 1972, it contested elections under the UNF alliance. In the eighties, its final contests were under its own banner with one candidate. On 14 March 2011, official approval was given to its discreet application to add "Singapura" to its name and "Angkasa" as short form. The faces behind the name change were unknown as it was thought to be, and continued to remain, inactive. On the other hand, its former Malaysian equivalent, known as Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) today, is a major Malaysia opposition party.
