Considered as the oldest active opposition party, it began as the Singapore extension of Peninsular UMNO, the anchor party of Alliance Party Malaya and later Barisan Nasional that dominates Malaysian politics until today. Similar to its counterpart, Singapore UMNO allied with the local branches of MCA and MIC. On 19 March 1967, it was renamed PKMS after a new legislation was passed in December 1966 forbidding local parties from being affiliated to foreign ones. The new name was approved by the government on 3 May 1967. Presently a component party of SDA along with JPS, it continues to maintain links with UMNO Malaysia. In recent years, it has been derailed by rampant infighting.
