Singapore Democratic Alliance
新加坡民主联盟
Perikatan Demokratik Singapura
Symbol: Star & four rings
This political umbrella was conceptualised by and centred around its leader Chiam See Tong, whose SPP was the anchor party. Originally, it aimed to unite all opposition parties under a single banner but the larger opposition parties turned down its offer. The alliance then kickstarted with four parties, namely SPP, NSP, PKMS and JPS. In 2007, NSP pulled out to develop its own brand name. In 2010, Chiam invited RP to join SDA but other alliance leaders opposed his unilateral decision to accept to RP's conditions to do so, sparking internal strife. Closer to the 2011 General Election, SPP exited the group it once headed, leaving it as an insignificant player.
