Singapore People's Party
新加坡人民党
Parti Rakyat Singapura
Symbol: 5-point star
A splinter party of SDP set up by several cadres loyal to its leader Chiam See Tong after his conflict with other party leaders reached a pinnacle. Days before the 1997 General Election, Chiam left SDP to join SPP. When SDA was established in 2001, SPP became its linchpin party and gave up its symbol to SDA. Ten years later, SPP pulled out of the alliance mainly due to an internal row over RP's conditions for joining SDA. In the 2011 GE, Chiam handed his Potong Pasir seat of 28 years to his wife, Lina Loh, to contest a GRC but the party lost all contests although its former stronghold landed Mdm Loh in a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament role. In 2015, the margin in Potong Pasir widened significantly, even beyond those in PAP strongholds, leaving SPP without representation and erasing traces of the opposition's legacy in the ward, which was subsumed into a neighbouring GRC in 2019.
